Electric scooter drivers must follow KET requirements

With the proliferation of electric scooters in the streets, sidewalks and pedestrian areas, the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration reminds that in the street, the owner of each electric scooter becomes a public traffic participant, who has to comply with the Road Traffic Rules (KET).

"Before setting off on the paths and streets, people should remember that the requirements of the Road Traffic Code are also binding on motorcycle riders, and electric scooters with an internal combustion engine or electric motor of power of not more than 1 kW and of a maximum of 25 kW. km / h, they are," said Laurynas Jovaišas, Chief Inspector of the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration, in a press release. According to him, such an electric scooter is classified as an electric bicycle and can be used on a bike lane or bike lane, and when there is no signposted bike lane or bike lane on the right side of the road, the sidewalk is allowed. "When driving on the road at night or in low visibility conditions, the driver of the electric scooter should turn on a white light at the front, a red light should illuminate at the rear, and a rider should wear a bright-colored safety vest with reflective materials," the expert recalled. He added that as you drive in the driveway, the same requirements apply during daylight hours. The report notes that the electric scooter can only be driven on the road with a good brake and sound signal. Drivers under the age of 18 must wear a cyclist helmet while on the road. According to L. Jovaisa, electric scooters can be classified as mopeds according to their technical characteristics if they develop speeds from 25 to 45 km / h and maximum net power is from 1 kW to 4 kW. In such a case, such vehicles must be registered, insured, roadworthy, and drivers of such vehicles must hold a driving license with the appropriate driving category. Without the necessary documentation, the driver of such an electric scooter would be subject to administrative liability. The driver and passengers of such vehicles must wear motorcycle helmets.
