The history of reflective material
begins, of course, in a work-related accident. In 1933, a certain Bob Switzer
unloaded tomatoes for Heinz, where he accidentally fell and suffered several
serious injuries. One of them was vision impairment, which made him stay in the
darkroom for months before recovering.
During that time, he worked with his
brother Joseph on experiments to create fluorescent colors that Joseph could
use in his magic performances. Soon they succeeded and in the following years
discovered several of them.
The first reflective garment was Bob's
wife's wedding dress, which he painted. His materials were later used in World
War II.
Decades have passed and reflective
material has become an essential part of working clothes in the United States
of America and also across the ocean. One of the biggest experiments with its
functionality took place in the sixties in Great Britain. The first railway
users started using reflective material. In the 1990s, it became a mandatory
tool for workers around the world.
Later it was adopted by motorcyclists
and cyclists, which he was able to protect in the event of traffic accidents.
Pedestrians also use reflective elements at night, and a reflective vest is
included in every motor vehicle's mandatory equipment.
Currently, the most popular branded
reflective material is the product from 3M and its subsidiary Scotchlite.
Strong silver material with unique technology has found its place in fashion in
recent years.
The biggest trend in reflective
clothing with reflective
fabric started in 2012
with the sports giant Nike, when he designed a jacket for American athletes at
the London Olympics. In subsequent collections, he began to use it richly.
The trend was greatly supported by the
then cult of cloud rap and his most famous representative Yung Lean, who chose
a jacket from this collection into a video clip for one of his biggest hits
Kyoto. Reflective clothing then became the uniform of a classic cloud
emo-rap fan.
A year later, a reflective collection
is published in cooperation with Supreme and The North Face. Over time, jackets
are becoming one of the most valuable pieces of this, let us say today's
classic pair.
Today, several young streetwear brands
specifically specialize in the production of fashion clothing from a variety of
reflective materials. The most famous is R-NATION, whose jackets and pants wear
such rap stars as Rich The Kid, Night Lovell, Smokepurpp, Lil Baby, but also
the Czech Yzomandias.
